WASHINGTON, DC (April 25, 2016) – The Social Restaurant Group is thrilled to announce the opening of their newest concept, Bonfire, an innovative, campfire focused restaurant and bar located in the heart of Dupont Circle. Under Executive Chef R.L. Boyd and Pastry Chef Ellen Diekemper, Bonfire will take Washington, DC by fiery storm with a playful menu incorporating elements of smoke, fire, and rustic cast iron cooking techniques in the form of creative s’mores, campfire skillets and an innovative menu highlighting seasonal ingredients such as day boat scallops, rockfish and wild mushrooms.
Designed by Swatchroom, Bonfire’s space enlivens the campfire and community spirit with a sleek and modern charm. Guests will be welcomed with high ceilings, exposed brick, and an open fire feature. The expansive space is warmed with beautiful textiles, and charred wood, rose gold and blackened steel metal accents. The first level combines bright and beautiful al fresco dining with an expansive bar area, communal high tops and lounge seating. The second level houses a cozier bar area and lower lounge tables fit for DC nightlife.
North Carolina native, Executive Chef R.L. Boyd and Nebraska native, Ellen Diekemper have worked together to create an eclectic mix of comforting New American fare and a unique and playful dining experience using grilling, smoking and cast iron skillet techniques to coax out rustic campfire flavors. The opening menu will feature a twist on a DC classic: Peach Mumbo Chicken Wings and Spicy Ginger-Cola Wings served with house made Proper Ranch for dipping. Tuna Poke will be packed with Hawaiian flavors, seasoned with Aleppo, white soy and preserved lime and served with avocado, fried garlic, and no-no rice, Chef’s playful name for forbidden rice. The aleppo-spiced “Handheld” Crispy Chicken will satisfy any fried chicken craving, stacked with house made pickle chips with the perfect crunch, sharp cheddar, and creamy mustard-mayo.
Campfire Skillets like the Dark Chocolate Skillet with Colombian chocolate and banana, topped with marshmallow and homemade graham crackers and the Seasonal Fruit Skillet, with brown buttered apples, cinnamon marshmallow and shortbread cookies will satisfy any sweet tooth, as well as Chef Diekemper’s comprehensive S’mores menu which offers a little something for everyone. The Peanut Butter & Banana boasts the widely loved and magical combination of homemade chocolate graham cracker, fragrant banana marshmallows and creamy peanut butter ganache.The Blueberry Lemon stands as a slightly lighter and more delicately flavored option featuring a crisp and buttery shortbread cookie with Chinese 5 spiced ganache, blueberry compote and lemon marshmallow.
Behind the bar at Bonfire, the ingenious minds of Glendon Hartley and Chad Spangler have procured an extensive collection of craft beers as well a creative cocktail program described as being “from the hearth.” For many of the cocktails, Spangler & Hartley will be using elements of woods salvaged from liquor aging barrels, each creating a unique aroma and flavor based on the type of wood and spirit the barrel housed. Concoctions include the Nocino, which features bourbon, sherry and smoked almond tea and the Sas-Squash which features roasted acorn squash, whiskey and smoke from a rye whiskey barrel stave. Other Manhattan and Old-Fashioned style cocktails will feature aged whiskies, brandy, aged rums, and the use of several varieties of woods, smoke, and fresh fruit juices which will highlight nuances in those concoctions.
Bonfire is located at 1132 19th Street, NW and is the 3rd restaurant from the Social Restaurant Group.
